Installing an eSIM on Android

Installing an eSIM takes about two minutes. Pick your phone brand below and follow the three parts: install the profile, set the APN if your plan needs one, and flip the right switches before you fly.

Pick your phone brand

These steps fit phones running clean Android — Google Pixel, Nothing, Sony Xperia, Nokia/HMD, Fairphone, ASUS, TCL, ZTE and the rest. Menu names differ slightly; the fastest route is to open Settings and type "eSIM" into the search bar at the top.

Install

  1. Open Settings. Connect to Wi-Fi and keep the QR code from your order at hand — on a computer, a second phone or a printout.
  2. Choose Network & internet. It is usually the first entry in the Settings list.
  3. Choose SIMs. This is where Android keeps every card — physical and eSIM. On some phones this entry is called Mobile network.
  4. Tap + Add SIM. On some phones it is a + next to the SIM list, or an Add eSIM entry. Your current SIM stays where it is.
  5. Tap Download a SIM instead?. The phone first suggests inserting a physical card — the eSIM hides behind this link at the bottom of the screen.
  6. Tap Next. The QR code scanner opens. If the phone asks how to add the eSIM, choose Scan QR code.
  7. Scan the QR code from your order. Only have this one phone? Take a screenshot of the QR code, open it in Google Photos and tap Lens (Google Lens) — the phone offers to add the eSIM.
  8. Tap Download. Downloading the profile usually takes under a minute. Stay on Wi-Fi until it finishes. Afterwards you can name the plan, e.g. "Travel" — tap it under SIMs.

APN — Turkey

  1. Choose Access point names. This chapter is for Turkey plans only — every other plan sets its APN by itself. The APN value is on your order page, next to the QR code. Path: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → your eSIM. The entry is at the bottom of the page, sometimes under Advanced.
  2. Tap +. The plus sits in the top-right corner. On some phones it is ⋮ → New APN.
  3. Enter the APN and save. Type the APN value from your order into both Name and APN. Leave everything else as it is, then tap ⋮ → Save.
  4. Select the new APN. Pick the access point you just added — the filled dot means it is the one in use.

Settings

  1. Use the eSIM for mobile data. Under SIMs, tap Mobile data and pick the eSIM. Calls and texts can stay on your own card. If the eSIM shows as inactive, tap it and turn on Use SIM.
  2. Turn off automatic data switching. Under SIMs, tap your home card. Left on, it lets the phone fall back to your home SIM — and that means roaming charges.
  3. Turn on Roaming and mobile data. Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → your eSIM. Turn on Mobile data and Roaming — a travel eSIM only ever works in roaming.

On arrival

  1. After landing: toggle airplane mode. The internet only starts working in the destination country. Once there, turn airplane mode on, wait 10 seconds and turn it off. Activation can take 5–15 minutes.
